KENYON COLLEGE VISIT: Summer 2008
Under the auspices of a Kathryn Wasserman Davis Projects for Peace award, four students from Kenyon College, in Gambier OH, traveled to Ethiopia earlier this summer to volunteer at the Mekele School for the
Blind for a period of 6 weeks.
The volunteers brought with them a
donation of Braille books for the school's new library, as well as
games, toys and a laptop computer outfitted for use by the blind.
While at the school, the volunteers implemented a curriculum similar
to that of a summer camp, whereby the students were given the opportunity to participate in several fun and educational activities
each day. These activities ranged from arts and crafts projects to
typing lessons and sports.
In addition to these activities, the
volunteers worked on organizing supplementary lessons on Braille
contraction and computer use, taught by former blind school students.
For the volunteers, working at Mekele School for the Blind was a life
changing experience; the volunteers founded life-long friendships with
the student and faculty at the school, and are already planning to return to the school in the future.
